Greetings my fellow brothers and sisters of Kansas,
I would definitely say.....all of it. That's the best part of this job, you really don't know what it is you're going to get until dispatch tones it out. Don't get me wrong I'd prefer to fight the house fires during cooler temps and the of course there is always grassfire season. My department does not do tech rescues, but the few opprotunites I've had to pop a door was pretty slick.
-Stay low
Well, when I was up north a wanted grass fires because we didn't have many, and I got to go"play" with out someone house burning down. Now that I have moved "home", I miss going out on rescue calls. Have lot's of grass fires, but we don't go out on rescue call here that much. But I would have to say hands down, I Love teaching Pub Ed. It's the best because it put you out with the public and you get to help them stay fire safe.
Our department doesn't do technical rescue but I am on a volunteer unit that does and I am what you'd call a Dope-on-a-Rope!!! I love high angle rope work. The rigging is fun because it challenges me to think.....there really is no auto pilot with ropes!!! But, the only thing I really don't care for is HazMat. I prefer to not be a "Glow Worm".
I don't get to very often, but I really love getting on the back of a grass rig!
Extrication is usually handled by the "guys" because when we have a need for extrication I am usually on the ambulance. We have very few structure fires. The only "real" structure fire I have been in is in the KU burn trailer during FF1! I was actually pleased with myself at how well I handled it, but it's not something I really want to do very often! I am not trained for water rescue, but I wouldn't mind getting some rescue training of all kinds.
iam like chele i like a good grass fire which we have more of those than any other type of fire nobody's home usally goes up in flame and the grass grows back better than before with alittle rain of course. somtimes those rains are few and far bettween here. We are short on volly's so even being assit chief i still get to jump on a grass rig and fight away my favorite is a four wheel drive ford its got 1100 gallons of water so you can stay out awhile before having to refill.structure fires are different lots of things to conceder we don't get many had zero in 2007.
i know we dont get many but ill all about structure fires. i dont know what is is about it but i love it. as for grass fires, their ok. i just get sick and tired of refilling the truck. that or getting the truck stuck. extrication is fun as well but usally handled by the older guys. guys more experienced with it.
