I was recently driving through a town in Virginia when the towns fire siren went off and I thought, wow, thats a sound from the past.
Or is it?
How many of you Vollies still have sirens calling you to the station?
We don't have sirens in our area, alpha numeric pagers only, I for one would love to have the re introduction of a siren during daylight hours as I believe it would alert the rest of the area that their fire fighters will be driving to the station and are in action.
Now we are usually unseen, unknown and unapreciated. A lot of the inhabitants do not even know our department are volunteers.
What do you think, should the sirens still be used?

In Remington, VA the fire siren would go off for every call. Then about 2 years ago they went to day time only. Then in the past year the siren has stopped. All of these changes are due to those who move from Northern VA to move "to the country." They complained about the noise and trouble sleeping. I miss the siren. At least when you heard it you could say a prayer to keep everyone safe and comming back to their families. My station does not have a siren and I wish that they would.
We have a siren here in rural Johnston county in NC. You can almost set your clocks by it. Every Sat @12 noon. Since we don't have a huge amount of calls, it still goes off when our pagers do. I think that the community that I live in will never get rid of it, or at least I hope not. Before I joined the dept, everytime I would hear it, I would think, hope everyone is OK. I think the sirens are a plus to the community as well as a reminder of times past.

Here in falls creek, pa we have both pagers and a siren that goes off for every call we have
In Upper Pottsgrove, PA, we have alpha pagers along with a house siren that sounds from 0600-2200. It used to sound all night but our neighbor decided to complain about it. He also complains about us running equiptment and training in the parking lot...but what do you expect when you move in accross the street from a firehouse.
we have both siren and pagers i am from allison#2, fayette county PA. all the departments in my county have both. no one evr complains about the siren and when it broke evryone wanted to know when we were going to get it fixed they said it was not the same to see the fire trucks leaving the station and not hearing the fire whistle.
We used to blow our sirens at noon every day,and for fires . But because one preson came to town and moved across from the pole the siren set on and he worked nights he went to the city manger and we no longer use them. Now only for tornado warnings.pfd824
In my Volie dept it is used on all fire calls. Sometimes late at night County dispatch wont activate it on a EMS call unless a second tone is put out for more help.
I work at a combination dept, we have a in-town tone and a out of town tone. The siren is used for all calls. I miss the old Klaxon horns that we used to have. We had a code for every street and special building such a school or hospital.
We use pagers and a siren. The siren is only used for fire or mva calls. The siren rotted out a couple years ago and the Chief said to screw it. The historical society said it was part of the history of the area and fought to keep it. We had to replace it since it is also part of the tornado warning system. We then had to keep using it for the calls due to the historical people.
My dept. does'nt use them anymore because the people in our village said they to annoying. So we're stuck using minitors and alpha numeric pagers. I'm younger but I can remember the sound of the siren sounding lunch everyday. To me it is a tradition and should be kept going everywhere.
we've got a fire station about 20 mile south of use that still do this his and it seems to work great for them
I can appreciate the sound of a good siren, but these days ours is only used for severe weather warnings.

We issue two-way radios to all personnel.

As far as our citizens knowing their vollies are in action, well I am pretty sure they all have scanners, because they know whats going on almost before we do.
