I am looking for some advice for an upcoming interview. I am about to complete firefighter 1 (which includes hazmat a&o and first responder) so I am ahead some of the competition already if my employer wants to save money on training. Now I have not yet passed or attempted the CPAT but I have already started PT in preparation for it.

Any advice and examples of questions is appreciated.

I used to interview people for employment so I'll see if I can help.

First dress right. Suit, or sports coat, or at least a nice collared shirt with Khakis. Mkae sure it fits correctly if it's a suit. The sleeves should stop at the wrist. Everything should be pressed.

Shakes hands only if they offer first. Firm but not over pwering. Don't sit until they sit or you're invted to sit down.

As for questions answer them honestly. Don't hesistate too often because it makes it look like you don't know, Are afraid to say the wrong thing or trying to say the right thing no matter what. Don't say like and um after everyother word.

Speak about your experience but the fact that you're looking forward to learning thier methods.
And please ask them questions, when are they looking to finalize the list, benefits or things that you need to know. Only 2-4 questions at most. Also say something about your personal life. hobbies and what makes you want to do the job. Oh make sure you know something about the department and the interviewers.

Good luck
Thanks! This advice will give me a good idea of how to present myself!
WOW, Criag great answer brother, you hit the nail on the head:)
Just got onto the firefighternation.com forums and was wondering if you still were interviewing and if so what particular questions do you have on the process. I would love to try to help.

he has many sample questions...
First things first alot of departments do not care that you have prior training....in fact (at least here in VA) alot of them would rather you have no training so that you don't bring any bad habits to there dept.

Wear a suit
SIt up straight
talk with confidence
make eye contact
do some research about tnot only the department but the locality that they serve. They are gonna ask you why do you wanna work here...so instead of giving them the answer they have heard 1 million times tell them something else. When asked this question in my interview I said that not only did the county have an excellent fire service but they also cared about there citizens alot since they were placing AED's in all county building facilities. The panel was blown away.

Good luck, keep training, and apply to all departments that you can this is a highly competative job when I was hired on 1000 people took the test and only 70 got hired not great odds.
Henderson Fire Dept. in Nevada(borders Las Vegas) is hiring Firefighter/Paramedics Great benefits, salary, retirement, and equipment.
