The Social Network & Community JUST for Firefighters
non-supression fire fighters
I am looking for any information that departments are willing to give out that they have on programs for non-suppression fire fighters. Our department is starting a program that is for people who do not want to fight fires, but can help anyway. It will sort of be a womens' auxiliary but more. The chief wants the people to be able to flag, do fund raising, do computer work, etc. Any help would be wonderful!

Isn't the term "non-suppression firefighters" an oxymoron? If you don't engage in fire suppression activites, then are you really a firefighter?
The term "administrative member", "support staff" or similar term is probably more accurate.
There are lots of Fire Police programs in the northeast - Maryland and Pennsylvania have lots of these programs. That will take care of help with traffic and crowd control. There are some pretty good training programs for these.
Tennessee has a statewide women's program called WATARS. You can find information about this program at: www.TNARS.org
Determine your department's administrative and support needs, then ADVERTISE in the community. You may be pleasantly surprised with the response.

I sort of fit into this . I have an artifical right leg(below the knee amputation). Now while this does not prevent me from doing everyday things, firefighting is one that it does. However I am a valuable member of my department. I have been a member of my department for almost 25 years and do lots of things around the house and on the scene. When I am able to respond I run the pump at the scene and sometimes take the role of safety officer. I am also a first responder,public education demonstrator. I hold the rank of Sergent(staff officer) and take care of most of the paperwork when on scene. So if you have people who are willing to help ,but don't cozy up to fires to well, therer are lots of things to do.

I'm kind of in this situation also. I was in a car accident almost two years ago and still on medical with the FD. It kills me not to be active. I want to do more but there is really nothing im allowed to do. I'M not even allowed to go to a live burn and take pictures. It really sucks. So in the mean time I go to the monthly meeting and thats about it :( for now

wow cant believe they dont let you at least take pictures, we've got an older gentleman that has a bad back and we let him do all of our picture taking for use and he loves it:)

i dont know if you have any ems background but if you do maybe find out if they do EMS only, our fd does and alot of the firefighter do go on medicals they tend to not be ems only so if you were to do it i would really make sure your there when you can be.
alot of my stations calls are ems about 80-90%, when a fire happens ems is dispatched secondary with no scbas they take care of the firefighters, gather on scene photos, check on people, make sure we hydrate etc and they also relay info for the chief or chiefs.

Check out the VFIS web site, also check on a group call Citzens Core, I think that it's name. I'll check with a friend of mine who is involved in another city and get back to you.... I know there are programs out there for support personell.

We have members like that we call them auxiliary members. They do every thing from drive a tanker to flag and help with fundraisers. They follow our bi-laws and are considered active members.

Aurora: The program you are looking for is called FireCorps. Please check out www.tigerschmittendorf.com for some outstanding info on making this work. Tiger is a personal friend of mine, he currently has the following categories operating within his department and I am actively pushing to bring this to ours: Fire/EMS, EMS only, Fire Police only and FireCorps. We have folks like this on our department. We call it the auxillary. Currently we have 5 female and 1 male members in the auxillary.
Also the state of Georgia started a program last year called "support firefighter"
those are members who can't make entry, but can do any number of things on the fire ground. They even had a training program for it.
