i am going to build my sons a table for a wooden thomas train set. i already have the plans drawn out. i am going to use a sheet of 1/2" thick ply wood and use 2x4s for the edging. or should i use 2x2s on top of the plywood and use some sort of facia for around the edges.( so their little hands dont get splintered) my question is for the legs of the table which will be approx. 2 feet tall should i use 4x4s or will 2x4s work. i will have a leg at each corner and one in the center of the board. any help and advice is appreciated.
2x4's would probably work well, but 4x4's would work better. It depends on how heavy this table will ultimately become once it's finished. Better to have too much support than not enough. Stay safe!
I meant to ask you this before, but why not just varnish it? Wouldn't it be easier to sand and varnish it than to add tons of plastic or fabric or whatnot around the edges?
