Our dept is specing out a new 6x6 UTV. Were looking at models such as the Firelite FDH-11 and ones similiar to it. We operate in a very rual district and like the combined features of having it as a brush fire unit as well as having the capabilites to haul patients. I was just wondering if anyone had any pro's and con's or experiences with any of these or any words of wisdom in purchasing one of these units. Thank you for your help.
Our Department has a Polaris, 6X6. With slip on wildland kit. It gets around well. The only drawback is only 50 gallons of water. Better be packing some foam. We do have the stokes platform so we can use it for rescues or EMS in hard to reach places. The only drawback to this type of unit I see is the ability to easily get it on scene. We have to hook on to the trailer to get it headed in the right direction. We are getting ready to order a Snowbulance from Equinox in Canada, this will be used for search and rescue for EMS. It can be towed by the 6X6 or a snowmachine in the winter.
thanks for the feed back. the unit we are looking at has a 70 gallon tank with a 5 gallon foam system but yeah I understand what you mean considering the small capacity of it being a drawback and I understand about getting it to the scene being a problem too but we dont run a very large district so our response time even with getting it hooked up to a truck shouldnt be too tremendously effected. Do you have any pro's or con's with the Polaris chassis vs the competitor companies? And that sounds pretty cool about the Snowbulance that you are getting. Hope it works out great for ya'll. I guess fortunately for us we dont usually have that large amounts of snow to require something like that. lol
These are a life, back, legs, arm saver. We haved used a mutal aid companys on several calls. From hauling dive gear to fighting brush fires these have become the new Jeep and better in some cases. The only thing I would do is look at a mounted body instead of a slide in. They can carry more water and have a storage compartment.RKO makes both kinds. I have a Japanese mini truck that is the same size as a 6x6 and they can carry more and go anywhere when you equip them right
