A fire that began in a tire storage facility and spread to a daycare center in northern Mexico killed at least 31 children Friday, officials said.
The center, in the city of Hermosilla in Sonora State, was government run, the BBC reported.
"We're still investigating what caused the fire," Jose Larrinaga of the state prosecutor's office said.
When the fire began, 176 children ranging in age from 6 months to 5 were believed to be inside. Many of them were trapped by thick smoke, local news media reported.
President Felipe Calderon offered condolences to the bereaved families, saying he felt "profound pain" over the deaths.
