We may have a blizzard warning stretching into May 1st here, but the brief snaps of nice weather have many of our guys talking spring training (not just the NFL, but fire ground training). One of the things being discussed is a Media Day to promote our excellent department and satiate public interest in our equipment and our professional activities.
An interesting twist to this annual talk is the idea of bringing in local news media (radio djs, news anchors, and reporters) and local politicians (such as city council members, mayor, etc.) and allowing them to not only see how we train, but also to donn some gear and try some drills.
Do any other departments out there have any such event where non-firefighters are allowed to participate?
Do any of you run a firefighter public competition (firefighter rodeo or challenge)?
If you did host such an event what would you like to see take place?
who would you like to see participate?
What concerns have you encountered around your own pub ed/ community outreach events?
What rewards have you experienced by holding these events?
