We may have a blizzard warning stretching into May 1st here, but the brief snaps of nice weather have many of our guys talking spring training (not just the NFL, but fire ground training).  One of the things being discussed is a Media Day to promote our excellent department and satiate public interest in our equipment and our professional activities.

An interesting twist to this annual talk is the idea of bringing in local news media (radio djs, news anchors, and reporters) and local politicians (such as city council members, mayor, etc.) and allowing them to not only see how we train, but also to donn some gear and try some drills.

Do any other departments out there have any such event where non-firefighters are allowed to participate?

Do any of you run a firefighter public competition (firefighter rodeo or challenge)?

If you did host such an event what would you like to see take place?

who would you like to see participate?

What concerns have you encountered around your own pub ed/ community outreach events?

What rewards have you experienced by holding these events?

I know Maryland Fire and Rescue Instiute has a day for members of congress and their people to get to wear fire gear and learn about firefighting. A few of the counties in Maryland invite their elected officals to get to play with fire gear and equipment.
We have our state and county conventions for the fire services so there are some contest involve with them. Hose and bucket contest, get dressed in gear contest, midnight alarm contest which involves getting out of a bed, dressing and running a course with stations to be completed. Then there contest which involves use of apparatus from pumping, auto extrication, to ladders and EMS contest. Most of this is done by members of the fire service with the public watching.
Some stations have open house where the public would get to spray a hose and knock down a target has to other activities involving the public it depends on the station.
