Shane Ray's "Rethinking Volunteer Firefighter Certification" article will make some waves...

The new superintendant of the South Carolina Fire Academy asks some tough question and offers some creative solutions to the problem of volunteer firefighter certification and just what that should mean.

Here's the article: http://www.firefighternation.com/article/training-0/rethinking-volu...

It is thought-provoking, to say the least.  What do you guys think?

Good Morning Bob!  I hope you are having a pleasant day.  :)

As my Chief said in a meeting the other night every person is essential to the fire department no matter what their role is, but to remember to do things safely and according to the standards and guidelines set by our department for the role that you are filling.

It's Friday .... Friday's are almost always pleasant.

Any position should have a defined set of required skills and  defined required training. By doing that you will allow them to do their jobs safely.

And next we will have EMS people who want to be on the ambulance but don't want to actually do patient contact, or assist in moving the patient, or patient care of any kind.

But hey that's okay because they must be valuable, right?

Ben why are you so combative with everyone?

Yes I am valuable.  Thank you.  Ask the EMT's that I ride with.

Sure you are...keep telling yourself that.

And next we will have EMS people who want to be on the ambulance but don't want to actually do patient contact, or assist in moving the patient, or patient care of any kind.

Actually, there many like that now... They are called Preceptors.

And honestly Oldman, if using an instructor as an example of what I said is the best you have, it really isn't much is it?

You know very well what I meant.  Nice try, but no points will be awarded.

Oldman's post made more sense than your silly ParaGod diversion.

This isn't a game and we're not keeping score.   Claiming that something that doesn't exist won't be awarded is delusional.

Don, that was a weak and inaccurate analogy.  The correct analogy would be to have ambulance crew members who are not EMTs or Paramedics.

That has happened for at least 40 years, especially in volunteer EMS agencies.  There are drivers and 3rd riders who assist patients in ways that don't require EMT or Paramedic certification.

If you're going to use an analogy, use one that is a comparison to what is actually being discussed.  Exterior firefighters do fire contact, they assist in moving hoses, ladders, and apparatus, and they certainly do not avoid firefighting of any kind.

Based on your omission of the obvious, that implies that both exterior firefighters and non-EMT EMS folks are indeed valuable, since they don't fit the artificial limitations you apply.

You still can't resist taking the conversation to imaginary extremes, can you?

FF Walz,

I'd take the word of people with whom you actually ride over the uninformed opinion of someone who doesn't know you or the EMTs with whom you work.

Don,

I was using a little humor, because honestly not everything is a contest to me.
