Plainfield Township (PA) police say the man who crashed a
North Bangor Fire Department fire apparatus earlier this month was
driving drunk and had a beer in his hand. In a criminal complaint filed
Wednesday, police say Zachary R. Romano, 20, of Upper Mount Bethel
Township registered a 0.16 percent blood-alcohol content after he
crashed a Mack fire engine July 10 on Kesslersville Road in Plainfield
Township.
A passenger riding with Romano at the time of the crash said Romano had
bought a 30-pack of Coors Light from a Stockertown beer distributor
earlier in the day before heading back to the fire department with the
beer. The driver of another firetruck told police Romano had a beer in
his hand while in the North Bangor truck. Romano is charged with DUI,
drinking while underage and reckless driving, among other related
offenses.

"drinking while underage" What was he doing driving the apparatus to start with. Sounds like that department has other issues as well.
My department, You ARE NOT driving any department vehicle at that age, period. You WILL NOT have alcohol in your possession while even riding in a department vehicle. You WILL NOT have alcohol in your possession including your POV on department property. Any violation results in immediate (permanent) removal from our roster, without recourse, and any criminal charges such as unauthorized use filed. Wreck a fire department vehicle with any trace of alcohol in your system, and one would be hard pressed to be able to join another fire department.
This cat needs to be blacklisted.

Just when you think the safety warnings and police warnings are starting to set in. Someone has to go even further in the contest of stupidity.
Ok, let's just assume they were wearing seatbelts, Jack, could it be deemed as "safe-ish"?
A question I have is, why didn't the other guys stop him if they in fact knew he was drinking the beer. You would at least think they would want some too.

Including " being stupid in a public place." (sec 2 sub sec. 23 a) Reckless endangerment of another piece of shit passenger,(paragraph 54, section 2 - part 1) failure to comply with momma's orders, being -act like a human (Part 4, subsection 2.5 sec. 1) living to impede the reputation of the fire dept. (.08 - part 9 - sub. 34)
and having a mack attack while under the influence of stupidity.
WTF

Can you say JACKASS.......? There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for this and both he and the Department now look like shit because of it....if anyone got hurt in the process they may very possibly be looking at the end of their Department...By the way if that was here in NY he was TWICE the legal limit....I feel zero tolerance should be the rule....if you drink...don't go.....you are a liability not an asset.....(not just don't drive...don't go on the call period)

I am sure that at some point we all made the big mistake of driving with a few in us. We were just lucky nothing happened. Being Volunteers, we have BBQ's at home, have a couple, the tones go in and we are off. Lets hope this will reach everyone now that if you had a few, don't drive, just don't go. That is what Mutual Aid is for if you don't get a good turn out. Be safe, not sorry. This time there wasn't a death, what about next time?

My department, thankfully, got rid of our club decades ago. These types of social clubs associated with local VFD's are common place all over the North East U.S, not just in PA. There is absolutely no place for alcohol in the fire department. I'm thankful that my department has some pretty strict guidelines/policies in place.

Shaking my head also, just puts a bad name for all of us. Was talking to a Captain on sheriff dept this morning about improper driving by vols, we both agreed we all have to be prudent both in POV and Fire Dept. rig's. We all need to clean up our image and remember to arrive safe, not fast and dead. Remember the fire well still be when we get there.
