enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.....not someone that has the old..."I know" attitude.......I like the old "3 up" rule....."Show up.....keep up.....shut up" That was given to me when I was a probie many, many years ago......
Enthusiasm and willingness to jump in are key. Most of what we do is not too hard, so keep up with the senior guy you are assigned to, keep your eyes open, and ask questions!
Staying away from the tv, keep busy dont sit around your new theres alot to learn, listen to the senior guys ask questions and like Paul said leave the "I know" attitude at the door.
Enthusiasm for the job...
Initiative to learn the subtle and not so subtle nuances about the job...
Punctuality plus... being their not only on ti,e but at least a half hour before the start of the shift.
Courtesy... see punctuality plus...
Honor and respect for those who did the job years before... the days of leather lungs, wooden ladders and iron men...
Honor and respect for those who died in the line of duty.
Honor and respect for themselves and their chosen profession.
Look sharp. Be humble and respectful of everyone and everything. Ask questions when there are teachable moments. And Ron has a good one: Always early.
Everything mentioned in the previous posts, particularly from Ron about respect.
Add to that, pride to be part of the team. emphasis on PART of the team Not THE WHOLE TEAM.
Pride to allow your customers to hold you to a higher standard, both on the job and away from the job. Once a firefighter, always a firefighter. People really DO respect firefighters. DO NOT TAKE THAT FOR GRANTED, by wearing I FIGHT WHAT YOU FEAR or Firefighter Dick shirts.
Remember the fire and emergency services CAN and WILL survive with out you. There is no indispensible person.

Too bad the question was " What do you NOT want to see in a new hire?"

All that said, IF the new ff1 / new hire is YOU, then I wish you the best of luck. Enjoy the experiences, never stop learning and wanting to learn, and above all - stay safe.
Besides the 3 up I like to see a new firefighter asking questions, it's a strange and fascinating new world when you first walk through the door, and the best way to come to grips with it is to ask.
Much of the advice given here is great and should be heeded. From a FF who seen the new FF come in, I've seen good and bad. My take is I like seeing the new person come in, put their gear on the rig, check their SCBA, radio, and ensure they are ready to go if a call comes in. Then check the rig over, make sure you know where stuff is and what your role is to be. (younger FF here catches the hydrant, so ensure the stuff is all there and ready). After checking your assigned rig over, check over the other rigs at the station to ensure the you know where stuff is.

One's first day, I expect to lead them around and show them how to do things, even cleaning the bathrooms and so forth, but subsequent days, they should know their role for station duties. I expect questions to be asked, and a new FF should not hesitate to jump in, yes initiative. On something I may differ on is the part of one always studying or being in a book etc. Part of crew integrity means spending time with the crew. Training and so forth is important, as well as, learning SOGs, streets, etc, but I don't believe that is all one should be doing as a new FF.
I lime the 3 up rule I'm gonna use that with the new guys I come in contact with.
Norm, i agree with you and Ron, so to tack on an extra tid bit, i once had it put to me this way. "to be on time is to be late, to be early is to be on time"

feel free to pass that on to a green horn next time they show up late for a shift.
