In my mind as a former chief I say no for the reason that younger members in the fire service they run a chance of getting hurt racing to the fire station to make the "truck". So they should just have a pager so they can here a call if you have one. Also the young members should have fun with the fire service don't get burn out. Becouse the fire service needs you be there in the long run!
Its in a pov so you cant really restrict the person from having it. The only thing the department can do is restrict the person from transmitting on the department frequencies.
Let's see.........Hmmm

A radio that does not transmit; $300 - $1200 + programming = a very expensive toy.

Uniden, Radio Shack (or your favorite brand) scanner that also does not transmit; $100 and easy enough for a trained monkey to program = a cheaper toy.

Man that's a tough call.

How about this option.

Because, in some states, unauthorized reception of police and fire radio communications is against the law, why not forget about both. Take the money you save, and buy books and study aids to learn how to do this job efficiently, correctly, and most importantly safely.

I can give you many, many, many different titles and subjects. Just a thought.
Discounting FFJR's from responding to calls, I wanted to note that prior discussions regarding this defended FFJR's having scanner's so they can "learn" from listening, not from responding. Simply telling FFJR's not to respond, if that is the direction of the Chief, means that if a FFJR has a scanner, and wants to listen in on the calls, then they can do so. If they show up at the scene, which would be disobeying a departmental directive, then they can forget being involved as a FFJR. Makes sense, right?

However, some people do go overboard with the radio thing... lol

It would be hard to restrict someone from purchasing their own scanner when you can download a scanner for your iPhone or iTouch for $4.99. And it works really well. Something about freedom of speech, right to know and the fact that anyone can have a scanner makes it impossible to enforce. Now having someone issued a two-way radio... different story.

CBz
Does that thing have a large enough alternator to power all those devices?????????????
Zack...
here is a thought for you to ponder. If all the real firefighters in your department don't feel it is important or necessary to have radios in their POV, what makes you think YOU are important enough to have them? Better yet, if your Fire Chief doesn't think its necessary to have his/her REAL FIREFIGHTERS outfitted with a fire radio in their POV, what would make you think it is necessary for a jr. to have one?
Oh, to answer your question... well you guessed it. Absolutely NO. If pagers don't accomplish what you feel needs to be accomplished, you need to reevaluate the situation I think.
I can remember back in the 60s when volunteers in our county had the low band radios in their POVs if they were an officer in their company. Most of the members now have their own portable radios they carry but that will change soon when the county changes to the new trunking sysytem and radios will be more expensive and limited to the number of portable radios allowed to be used, so no private owned portable radios unless a volunteer fire company wants to buy them for their members.
All members on our fire department after thier 6 month probation have transmitting radios. They do have rules to go by for them.
first off why would you have a radio that does not transmit how do u talk, second in our dept everyone has a pager, the chief and officers carry radios as do ems personnel probies get nothing but a hard time
CB, did you steal FETC'S ride???
my boss had an extra one and put his frequency in it. he also programs them so it was 100% free
see we all have pagers. i have it to listen to traffic because i travel around alot. i dont want or need to talk. it is doing the same thing a pager does but has a longer range. thanks for the post
