Chevron stripes
We have been trying to get our older trucks retrofitted with chevron striping on the rear. Has anyone had experience with the reflective dots or diamonds that you apply to tread plate materials. Do they stick good enough to the tread plate? Do they look good and show up good at night? Any thoughts, good or bad would be appreciated!

Steve, we have them on order and are waiting for them to show up. Everything I saw and looked at appeared that they were well worth the investment. I did order extra not knowing how well they hold up and for how long. As to the reflectivity an visual issues they looked great in all the liturature I saw.

A neighboring department applied them to their older apparatus and if I were to do it, I would rather get rid of the diamond plate. I"m not impressed. I have been behind their apparatus at night and the dots are not very visible unless viewed at an angle. They can be seen fairly well in daylight.

no but I bet that if your trucks get hit, that they will get hit at about the same speed as the trucks with the striping.
Just another BS NFPA $ making racket.

Actually, it (reflective stripes) comes down from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices from the Federal Highway Administration. NFPA adopted it after it had already become mandatory under federal law.
But you are correct, the speed factor doesn't change.

Steve, my first question is Y are you bring your older trucks up to today’s NFPA regulations? If the trucks meet the compliance in the year that they were put into service your good to go...Y not take that extra money that it is costing you and put it toward something that will benefit your entire dept like equipment or training. I design apparatus on the side from being a chief and nothing against the dots and diamonds but it is a costly factor to do and as you know as well as I do if its a drunk driver at night even with your zone *C* lighting uppers and lowers it ant going to make any difference. Your personal on scene if its anything other then a fire buy some vest and if you want to go beyond that like I have for my guys put lite trackers on there DRD devices or bunker coat loops so they can be seen on any night time operations on or off road sides. But I can say this chevron striping does show up allot better at the rear then the dots or diamonds. And yes chevron striping can be applied to diamond plate because I have done it; all it takes is a good striping and lettering guy and a good heat gun. Good luck to you brother!!!! From my experience working FD Logistics, I found that networking over the phone with larger department apparatus repair and service shop managers will save you a lit of time and effort. I made friends with the guy who ran LaCoFD's shop and was amazed with his wealth of knowledge. Just another option to put in your tool bag...
