I would like to know if you carry a firearm concealed, what are your stations rules about it when it comes to arriving at the station? What I mean is... Do you keep the firearm in your vehicle or do you simply leave it at home? If you forget you have your firearm with you and you arrive to the station, what do you do? Are there any provisions at all for carrying a firearm as a firefigher in your state?
Is there an NFPA standard prohibiting a firefighter from carrying a firearm or is there one in the works?
I am helping to develop an SOP for my brigade and I would like to know what other brigades have in their SOP. I am
Firstly Jason, do the laws in the Philippines allow the carrying of firearms? That one would come first I should think. Secondly, from chat I don't think that NFPA has much bearing up there!
For us, no firearms allowed. My fire service won't allow the carrying of firearms on vehicles.
Thanks Tony, the Philippines allows a person to carry concealed if they have a permits. As for fire and EMS, there are pretty much no laws yet but many people carry. I am looking to find out what are the rules of different departments so that I can adapt some rules to my brigade.
That would be ditto here as well, as as far as I know leaving a gun in a car is a violation of the law here, it would NOT be considered to be secure. Pretty much the permit is for an individual to carry a concealed gun, not to leave it in their vehicle.
Thanks, I know in the State of Florida you can have your firearm in your vehicle for transport but you must take it out when you leave the vehicle because of the same reason you stated.
If NFPA does not cover firefighters carrying firearms, hmm, that should be good enough reason for a firefighter to not carry while on duty or while at their station.
We do not allow firearms of any kind on the dept. grounds, period. If you forget you have it on you and you respond, the police would be more than happy to hold on to it and return it to you at the station after the call but you can expect to get some kind of disciplinary action from it.
Jason, I was a volunteer firefighter and a full time law enforcement officer. I usually did have my weapon on me and more than once was wearing my police uniform under my turnout gear. I had to secure my duty belt in my car of course to be able to wear the turn out gear. I carried concealed all the time and my department did not have any issue with it, due to my LE status.
Thanks Captain 703 and David. What are the exact disciplinary measures that your department has for accidentally bringing your firearm into your station?
Hey, I'm a firefighter for the Marine Corps and we do not carry our rifles or sidearms to the station. Our weapons remain at the station armory until we need them. I believe that if the military doesn't carry at the work place niether should your department, unless you are in a danger/combat zone.
