Ride alongs?
I am fourteen years old. Please take me seriously. I know I want to be a paramedic, but I want to know what age I have to be to participate in ride-alongs with paramedics from my local Fire Department. If I'm going to do this, I don't want to just do it. I want to experience it (at least a little bit) before the fact. I am not sure if I have to be eighteen or what because I have friends who are working at little snack bars or the library for "work experience". Would this be categorized with that? I have asked this question three times on yahoo answers, but nobody wants to answer it! PLEASE answer!!!

I recommend looking for an explorer post in your area because
they can provide you with the necessary training and SOOOO MUCH more.

Katie, you might want to drop by the ambulance and talk with the supervisor there about your interest. Thats where your going to get the only definitive answer to your question. What we do or someone else does has nothing to do with what your local ambulance does or their policy as to ride-alongs and age requirements.

Hi Katie, Look into a Fire Exporer post in your area, the age to start that is fourteen. As far as a ride-along, I believe you need to be eighteen. Not to take away any of your excitement, but you have to be eighteen to become an EMT, so the explorer organization is the way to go for your age.

I do know for a fact that you have to be at least 18 to hold a Paramedic License in the US. The National Registry of EMTs will not issue a license if you are under 18. And in most states, you have to have the NR to be eligible for a state license. In Texas, you can be on the roster of a fire department at 17, but they usually do not allow the 17 year old to take part in operations. They are "gophers" until they are 18 and have the required training to enter an IDLH atmosphere. But I agree with you, it takes a lot of hard work just to be able to call yourself a firefighter and/or a Paramedic.

where im from, i do 'ride alongs' as you call them all the time w/ the ambulance svc that im an explorer at. we can do anything up to our certification. me being a cfr, i cant do much. but i can take vitals, cpr and things of the sort

Wow that is a hard one to answer. The state where I live says 18 on ride alongs. But we do have raiped responders . These are kids that are trained in cpr and some basic skills. They help us in the schools. We also have first responders on our depts. They are older and more trained. You should see if you can get into some thing like that if you can. It would be a good place to start . Good luck stay safe. Hope this helps.
