NIMS and ICS..
It seems that in our department the hardest thing for us is to establish and maintain a managerial IC. I'm Guilty of it myself. Keep in mind we are a volunteer department and personal is sometimes limited. I'm just wondering if any of you have had similar experience's,and if so have or how have you lowered the hurdles?

It was hard at first for us too. We are in the same boat, we also are a small vol. dept. and on some calls we may only have 3 or 4 members at scene. But the way we handle it is... the first person on scene establishes command, the first officer at scene assumes command. if all of the officers are fighting fire or if there are no officers at scene our engineer ( me ) or another engineer will assume command. It can be tough and a pain at times, but for accountablilty reasons it is important.
A training tip. On training nights set up senarios and have every member take a turn as IC, don't get to complicated maybe up to a couple sectors. but not to much or people lose interest.
Also use it on most of your calls even small ones until you become comfortable with it. it will become second nature and you won't give it a thought...
The IC system works very well, as long as you don't over complicate it.

So far so good for us I guess. We are starting to get a flow going and the guys are using it. What I am working on now is our accountablity system, or lack there of.

Kevin, i am in the same boat. Almost. Most of us have the NIMS training, and know we are supposed to be doing this, but since 1982 when our department was founded, they have been doing nothing. Now myself and a few "young" guys are headed up the ranks and trying to change things to make it safer and more current, and its hair-lipping the other guys. My question is how do you get these guys to convert?????

You have to maintain some type of management, without managemnet you have free lancing and with free lancing firefighter's get hurt or killed. My question is does your department have a policy on use of ICS? Regardless if you are a volunteer or paid department we all are professional. Yes sometimes personel is limited it can also be limited in a paid department, nothing says you have fill every organizational position as long as command knows that they are responsible for those positions not filled. It appears that during your departments training you don't include the IC system enough, you know the old saying "practice makes perfect" might I suggest that when you do training include the ICS. Also upper management needs to be in full support of the system, without that support it will never be established.

I can top that easy. As one of the Department Training Officer's, I have been tasked by my Chief to train the City's Administration and Police in NIMS 100, 200, and 700 and it has to be done in the next few weeks. How's that for a kick in the teeth? First of all, I do not speak "Cop" and I am allergic to politicians. If anyone out there has any suggestions, please help me out. Thanks
