Melissa I am a Christian and i celebrate Christmas. There are somethings you should know. Have you ever heard of Yule. As in the Yule log. Yule is a time that many people celebrated. It was a Germanic midwinter festival involving a sacrificial feast that was absorbed into Christmas. The pagan Germanic peoples celebrated Yule from late December to early January on a date determined by the lunar Germanic calendar, but the festival was placed on December 25 when the Christian (Julian) calendar was adopted. Also Christmas trees were once used by Pagans to bring part of the forest into there homes so the wood spirts would have a place to keep warm during the winter. What i am trying tosay is that in the US It IS Merry Christmas AND anything else anyone else wants it to be. That is what this country is about. The 1st admendment says it all. Its Freedom of Religon not Just YOUR religon.

I think people who also celebrate Hanukkah and Quanza or any other holiday that has the same or similar meaning won't mind if we say Merry Christmas.
I know it isn't politically correct and I can almost appologize for that but for those who want to take Christ out of Christmas that is fine for them but they should leave those of us alone who do celebrate the reason for the season.

At the university, those who don't celebrate religious holidays have nothing to do while the rest of us are having ours. As it is, our "winter break" coinsides with Christmas & New Years. We work next Monday and are off until Jan 2nd. We are between semesters and the university is closed during that time. Of course, as state employees, the days we are off are our compensation time for the holidays other state workers had off that we had to work. I usually don't mind having 10 days off for what ever reason. :)

I certainly hope my serving 36 years in the US Army, in three wars, to protect the rights of all Americans was not in vain. Plus those who served before me. Other religious holidays that are celebrated during Christmas time weren't designed to replace Christmas. They have a history started way before the good "ol USA was born. I welcome those who celebrate other holidays and there right to greet anyway they want. TCSS

I agree with Will. We were based as a Christian country and therefore celebrate christian holidays. I don't have a problem with you celebrating whatever holidays you want to but .. . . in the U.S. .... it's Merry Christmas. And if you don't like it . .. go where everyone else is celebrating your holiday.

Will,

I celebrate Christmas and accept Merry Christmas as a greeting plus give it too. There are some who don't celebrate Christmas but celebrate another holiday this season, one that I don't, so if I know that in advance it's Happy Holidays so that the greeting has a meaning to that person. After all it's about giving a greeting that fits. TCSS
