"Our initial response would be our department plus an auto aid department. Response would probably be very similar to this department's, that is one engine on scene for at least a few minutes by itself. Usually can turn out 5 firefighters on the…"

Where were you?

Sitting here on the cusp of the 15th anniversary of 9/11 I can't help but think about where I was on that day. I was in the 4th grade and my mom came and woke me up and said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Of course I had no idea what a WTC was or where in the world it was but came out to watch the TV anyway. I watched as black smoke billowed out of the first tower. I then watched as the second plane hit the other tower. I will never forget that day as long as I live. Little did I…See More

"Nokomis Area Fire Protection District in Nokomis, IL. I guess our station number would be 700 with engines 701, 702, 703, tender 704, Squad 705 and brush 707. My unit number is 727. We have about 25 members and cover the northeast corner of…"

Rob Young replied to Dylan Goldsmith's discussion Smoke Flow in the group The Volunteers
"Smoke generally flows up because it is hot. No smoke on the floor below the fire usually means that not enough smoke has built up to fill the space enough to push it down to the second floor. This often would be the case because smoke rising will…"

Smoke Flow

Hey guys and gals got a question for you. I've been to a couple fires here in the last year where the fire was on the second floor with heavy smoke conditions but no smoke on the ceiling of the first floor. I've been looking over a lot of the NIST and UL flow path studies but can't seem to find anything about smoke flowing below its level of origin. The door has been left open on both fires but there was no change in either smoke behavior or movement. My question is: can smoke flow downward and…See More
