I did show my tattoos to my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles..the whole family. But do I have one that is not covered by short sleeve? No. I do have a naked mermaid on my upper arm. One of my souvenirs from the Navy.
I'm not going to turn to a life of crime, or anything, but my body is my own now, and not my mother's (hasn't been for a long, long time), if I choose to have a tattoo or more, that is my choice alone.
Frankly, I strive not to disappoint my Mom, either, but when you children first become adults, there is always a little disappointment involved in seeing them making their own adult decisions. I know this personally.
Is my Mom still disappointed about my tattoos? If she is she hasn't said anything in 20 years. By time my sister got her tattoos, my Mom was just fine with them.
If you don't want a tattoo, there's no shame in that, you don't need a crutch to say "no" to ink. ;-)
I think judging someone because they have a tattoo is the epitome of stupidity. If the tattoo is in good taste, and adheres to rules/regulations I don't see how it has a negative impact on the job performed. Most people I have met get tattoos for a specific reason, whether it's to pay tribute, show pride, or express a deep feeling. I have 7 tattos and if I'm in uniform you would never know. I hope you would judge my performance on the job or who I am with a little more of an open and honest mind.
