What does a Frozen Hydrant Specialist do? How do you take a hydrant in the winter time if the hydrant is frozen?

Where I am at it is not typical to get freeze spells.  We do get them from time to time and they generally last a few days.

Simple, you don't. If the hydrant is truly frozen, you won't be getting water from it, so move on to the next one.
That is why in areas where it gets freezing temps, you have dry hydrants.
John, around here, we also have hydrant cozies. Keeps the barrel warm and looks great.
well were in louisiana we have dry barrel fire hydrants. Do ya'll have dry barrel hydrants up there? Cant imagine you not having dry barrel hydrants. And if a dry barrel hydrant dont leak i wouldnt think they would freeze is this not the case up north where its colder?
I'm sure is does Jack, we were thinking of snuggies for the hydrants here, but like most things for the FD it was cut out of the budget.
Yes, Joseph, most depts here in the north use dry barrel hydrants. It is still possible that one can freeze up, either because the valve is bad, drain is plugged, etc. In the end there really isn't much you can do expect notify whoever takes care of the hydrants and for the most part, you may just have to wait until it thaws.

We do get update by the water dept of hydrants OOS etc, but the spacing of hydrants makes it easy to get another one if one is froze up.
I read that article too about the Frozen Hydrant Specialists. I guess when the FF's discover a frozen hydrant, he can walk up and say, "stand back boys I'll handle this ... yep, this one's frozen". LOL
I also believe the role of such a specialist is to ensure the hydrant is frozen by sticking their tongue to to hydrant.

Isn't the frozen hydrant specialist the one with four legs walks up lifts a leg puts the yellow liquid on the caps to freeze them on so no one can open them ? lol , but in reality if a hydrant is frozen go to the next one , and get tankers(tenders) coming for shuttle ,
It was something that I had read about.
Animal print or plain colors?
In my area, it is a hunt for the hydrants. The ones that you can see and know where they are, are marked OOS. Oh and if you need them in the winter time you have to swim to them.
Shuttles are the most common thing we will do out there. the water district has to be notified before we tap a hydrant. One of the things that we are planning to do is update our map with all of the draft sites and working hyrdrants in our area.
