Age and The Ability to Perform

Should a persons age be a facture in determining if they can or cannot perform certain tasks for the fire department? What about a persons weight? Or should it be if you can perform your task performances in the allotted time no matter how old you are or how much you weigh? I have been reading a discussion (and participating in it) where if you are older you are more stubborn, and over confident in your abilities. What about those who are younger fresh out of school and academy should that same comment apply to them?

actually we call that little knot the "Depeyster love knot" sort of a joke at one of our neighboring Departments......we use it for high angle rescue to secure a victims hands/arms during a lift/descent

Age, weight or height do not factor. On our job it is based on can you do the tasks. You must be able to do all the tasks. Climming 23 stories in full gear with tools and xtra bottles, walking in to a wildfire 3 miles with all your gear and tools, being able to cut a roof or force a metal door, if you can't do it, it is time to retire. Or go and sell shoes or something. We have an engine lieutenant that is 68, he can do all the above. We have had people in recruit class that could not, they are not here anymore.
