Here's another story of a homeowner who didn't pay the subscription fee for fire protection, believing that, if he had a fire, the fire department would come anyway.
He was wrong.
This follows the same line of thinking of districts who shut down their departments, believing that, if they needed fire protection, they could rely on mutual aid.
What is wrong with that thinking?

Ben....Have you listened to the Podcast (FirefighterNetCast)? Did you hear that firefighters on the engine that had to stand by and watch the house burn, called the homeowner to apologize? They said they felt sick.
What's your feeling on that, in that my point is that there's a Morally good thing to do, and the Rules to follow?

Jeff, it's very hard for us to even comprehend this matter. We have our two State FRS's that work together (automatically) to do the best to defend any private property in the State. Not so in the USA. The whole thing with the South Fulton fire is that the property concerned is outside the city limits, therefore outside the FD's response area, outside it's territory. The people close to Sth Fulton have the ability to enter into a contract with the SFFD for coverage, for the nominal yearly fee of $75. The owner of the house concerned appears to have opted to not pay, whereas his neighbour did pay and therefore could call for help. Messy and weired, yes; but it's the system they have in that county, a county with NO county fire service, none at all.
The direction to not fight fires outside the city, where no payment has been made, came from the city council, the people in charge of the FD. If the FF's had attacked the house fire they would have been disobeying a direct instruction from their employer. They may well therefore have not been covered by any insurance. Very risky. I would not have liked being in the position of those FF's. Stand and watch, or go directly against the direction of your employer where there was no life risk?

Ben, people will post according to what they themselves know from experience. It has to colour our thoughts. What has to be done here is to step outside our own system and see what South Fulton lives under. You keep trying to get that across...
As I just said above to another Aussie, we find it hard to comprehend this matter. It's so far outside the norm that we know. I've seen many posts from people far closer than Jeff and I who don't seem to understand it either.
I would hate to be under the system in place in Obion County - in fact I would prefer to view it as a 'lack of system'. But it's what they have, what they've voted for, so they can live with it or get it changed, it's all up to them. As you've implied, we have to acknowledge what they have.

No one said that doing the right thing always makes you feel good, Herb.
Apparently you'd rather feel good than do the right thing.
The moral thing would have been for the homeowner to follow the rules.

This wasn't a mutual aid situation. The homeowner intentionally bought his home in a place that has no fire protection.
South Fulton provides a subscription service outside their jurisdiction to their contractees.
It would be unethical and unfair for them to provide the same service to non-subscribers.

It doesn't shock me that someone who uses so many logical fallacies would complain about being called out for it.
If you don't know how to debate without using logical fallacies, please educate yourself.
If you don't know what logical fallacies are, then you really do need to educate yourself - and more importantly, you need to stop using them, as does Daniel.

We would never let this happen on our Dept. feel bad for the guys that didnt agree but the Chief is the boss and he has to deal with his decision. We are an all Volunteer dept. in Arkansas and full subscription membership most insurance companies require membership otherwise we will bill the homeowner if they are not a member and then usually waive that if they promise to stay current, even if the person was not a member still need to respond to protect exposures and serve the public this is a slap in the face to every dedicated firefighter out there Pro or Volunteer the fire doesnt care it burns the same.
