Here's another story of a homeowner who didn't pay the subscription fee for fire protection, believing that, if he had a fire, the fire department would come anyway.

He was wrong.

This follows the same line of thinking of districts who shut down their departments, believing that, if they needed fire protection, they could rely on mutual aid.

What is wrong with that thinking?

Or...

He can move to the city!

I hear they have fire protection there.

Poor guy will have to pay taxes though.

There's always a downside.

That's a good idea just curious how one should go about billing someone who does not pay his bill in the first place.

Nor the fire fighters. Does anyone think for a moment they were comfortable with just watching a home burn?

A fully privatized, fee-based fire service that libertarians advocate - one free of tax funding - will force many more firefighters to stand by as they watch the burning homes of those unable or unwilling to pay.

That day, that vision will come over my dead body.

The fire department in question had NO duty to act.

The fire was out of their jurisdiction.  The people in Obion County have intentionally chosen to not pay for a fire department.  That decision is on them, not on the city of South Fulton, who can't afford to give away fire protection out of their jurisdiction for free.

To the Posters:

As the thread starter, we have a real opportunity to intelligently and respectfully discuss this important topic.

So, before we get an admonishment from the Web Team, I am going to discourage any of you from posting personal attacks, insults and responses that are not on topic.

Clearly, this is a topic that has caused much thought and discussion.

Let's do that.

We don't have to agree or disagree.

We just need to do it respectfully.

Thank you in advance.

The President of the IAFF, who is the poster boy for being anti-volunteer now tells volunteers that not only should they give their services away for free, but they should do it out of jurisdiction, too.

I realize that's not exactly what Harold S. said, but that's the effect of what he said.

That's more than a little hypocritical.

Insurance companies owning their own fire departments goes way back 200 or more years.

What "libertarian ethos" are you talking about???

Libertarians believe in Night Watchman government - in other words, the FIRST duty of government is to provide public safety services.

The example in question is about as anti-libertarian as you can get.

This is exactly right. The citizens of Obion County are getting everything they paid for.

To borrow a phrase, this is the high cost of low taxes.

Can you find a quote from the home owner that states this "Yet a homeowner felt it was unnecessary on his part".

Exactly my point - this is de-evolution in action.

I call shennanigans, Daniel.

This has nothing to do with libertarianism and rugged individualism.

It has everything to do with an individual trying to game the system, and being angry because he made a bad decision and ended up getting exactly what he paid for - no fire protection.

You and that twit Olberman are both over-reaching on this one.

You are applying apple orchard rules to an orange grove.
