Hola,
Just wanted to get some honest feed back about how men feel about having women serve as FF. Please be very honest! The reason for this is:
1. I have witnessed society feels women can't do this job- we are to fragile , etc.
2. People think women that work around a bunch of men must be easy or having relations with at least one of the them
3. Sexual harrassment issues arise more often
4. Some men have trouble taking orders from a woman (or vice versa)
These are just a few of the things I have seen or heard about.. Please share y you feel this way
The point about the SEALs was, if the government sees everyone equal and that fire departments around the country should lower the standards for physical agility test (CPAT) to allow more women to be able to pass....then why are women not even allowed to apply for SEALs. As I said, I am not against women on the job. Just don't lower the physical standards to be able to make it. The tests should be difficult and somewhat reflect the physical demands of the job. By lowering the standards you allow a lot people (men and women) who shouldn't be there...be there.
No I wouldn't care but that is not the point. I am not bashing women on the fire dept!!! I am bashing the government for lowering the standards. There were women on the job before they stepped in and said that they would like to see more women in these types of jobs. In the early 90's we had lots of women apply for our dept., but due to the demands of the physical testing, most did not make the cut or quit. We did have some make it and they are a lot tougher than the ones we are hiring now. Also, the males we are hiring are not nearly as tough as they were 10-12 years ago due to the lower standards. So by lowering the testing standards what did we gain??
You are right WestPhilly... I did get a little caught up in the whole thing. Itjust blows my mind that so many of these people think that anyone who has "heart" can be a firefighter. If that is all it takes, I'm trying too hard.

Your absolutely right with the statement above , "The tests should be difficult and reflect the physical demands of the job", and about having the heart statement. I for one ( as with my first comment on the subject matter) fully believe and expect nothing less out of a female then I do out of the males...and yes, the tests have lightened up. This is why regardless of what the states approve, I put my guys through rigorous training constantly. I even go through it with them, not to prove anything, but to keep myself fit and ready and well trained also, my position or sex does not in any way exempt me from anything the guys must go through. And a "heart" will not keep us safe nor get the job done. But CED, read my previous comments on this issue, and you will see for yourself, female or not, how I stand on this issue. BTW, the Navy seals comment, was to lighten things up, seemed to be getting a bit hot in here fin the last few comments ,lol.
Also WestPhilly, I certainly wouldn't resort to name calling, way out of my character , besides, I have an image to up hold. ( holding up an image of my new pups, haha)

Give it time , the way the female screams for equality, its only a matter of time before women are allowed in and they too soon change their agility tests. ( OMG, did I say that?...Looks down at feet and starts whistling , then looks around all innocent like) I do agree with not lowering the standards,, besides, when I went through it, it wasn't lowered, I'm beginning to feel a bit jipped here, lol.

Finally... someone understands what I was trying to say. It only took me about 20 posts to get my point across. I guess that is why I am a firefighter not a writer. lol
I have NO problem with women in the fire service! The department I am on currently has 2 women on the department, Plus my sister was a firefighter for several years before becoming EMS Cooridinator at a local hospital! I will say that yes what you have posted is true! I believe that women deserve the respect as the men & some women have actuLLy proven to be stronger then men!
My God; this thread has taken on a life of its own.
Why is this topic such an emotional issue?
Why is it even an issue?
Think about all of the variations of this "theme" of "women in the fire service" that we have explored on this website. When is a junior/explorer considered a firefighter? I have a disability; can I still be a firefighter? What does it take to be a firefighter? I'm short; can I still be a firefighter? What classes do I need to take to be a firefighter? Does gender matter to be a firefighter? I think; therefore, I am!
Or so it would seem. People with the best intentions aren't necessarily rewarded with positive outcomes. Something in their life touches their moral compass and all of a sudden, they want to get on a fire department.
They witnessed a successful extrication, watched as a crew went to the roof of a housefire, they were helped by the fire department or they wanted to get on after their kids said something like "Jimmy's dad is on the fire department and that's very cool". Well, Jimmy's dad is a dweeb. If he can get on the fire department, then I'm a shoo-in.
Whatever the reason, many people don't realize that (a) You have to be reasonably intelligent (b) You have to exhibit uncommon common sense (c) Be in better than "good" shape (d) Be prepared to spend many hours training (e) Be prepared to leave family gatherings, sporting events, church, get up in the middle of the night (f) Never let either family down. That is the family at home and the family at the fire station. If you cannot strike a balance with both families to where both families benefit, then you have to give up one or the other. If either feels neglected, you are headed for trouble.
What I have stated here applies to MEN and WOMEN.
So, WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?
TCSS.

I haven't heard the word "dweeb" in a while. Love it!! lol. Good post too. It is easy to spot the seasoned officers around here. Me not being one of them. Yet...
