Fire Department websites - what's "professional"?
My organization recently created (for free) a website for our local, very rural, fire district. I insisted it look "professional" rather than "goth". I've noticed that photos, gifs, color schemes, etc. offered online for creators of fire department websites tend toward what I think of as less than professional - loud colors, cartoonish graphics, shock-shlock photos (my opinion I admit). Remember, I'm talking about a website meant to represent a fire department to its public, not a site like this one (firefighternation.com) that is for the fire and EMS services. Please check out our new website and let me know what you think of it. Would you want your department represented to the public with such a site or would you want something more "exciting"?

really dont think it has look so professional... it is a fire dept site make it fun... make people wanna come look at it and wanna come back.....

I like it. It's clean, not cluttered and does the job. And yes, I'm with Damnthing - glitzy noisy flashing whatever sites have me exiting straight away. Have your fun pages, have a gallery (of course blanking out car number plates etc and staying away from horror shots), have a kids page.
Page colour? Certainly experiment, but make sure that the text/backgound colours are complimentary, not clashing. I'd personally stay away from the bright colours, except for borders, I like to be able to see what's on the page!
One last thing, don't crowd your pages. It's better to link to other pages than try to fit it all on one screen! Oops, my training in IT is showing through...

I think it looks good, though obviously still under construction (as ours is). But then, show me a web site that isn't...
I worked with an outside developer to come up with ours. The intent was to use the site as a promotional tool so that prospective members could look at the department through the privacy of the internet.
I think of it as part of our recruitment and retention activities; you can never make a second first impression.

You page for apparatus is blank. How about telling what services yoru agency provides? Possible utilize the web site to do some public education? And I saw someone else mention Kentlad, theirs is very nice. A little flashy for some folks' ability in the realm of HTML, but if you can do it, go for it. Your page is about my speed on the HTML end of things, but just a little lacking in content.

Nice website.
I would change the background, increase the size of the font and activate the "links".
When I click on a "link", I want it to take me there.
But good job. The fire department should be grateful to you.

I think that it looks very good, perhaps a photo link would spark up some interest I know I always enjoy being able to see what's going on.
Also if you don't mind me asking what did you use to create the free site, was it an online host or otherwise? I have been attempting to do one for a while now but have not had much luck.

Hi Craig,
We rent our hosting from OMNIS out of Torrance, California. They're a good company. It costs $89.00 per year for the hosting and $7.95 per year for the url registration.
We use the Adobe products in our company. So, to create the website HTML pages we use GoLive. It's no longer offered alone but is now incorporated into their website creation suites of programs.
