I was on line looking up some firefighting items and I came across this question and thought it was interesting. If you had to have only one image...one icon...to represent the fire service as a whole...what would it be? Dalmation? Leather helmet? American LaFrance? Brass pole? Maltese cross? Ahrens-Fox?? Others??

In North America.
"they were the first firefighters" is something I cannot agree with. Read about Florian, and the way the Romans responded to fire. The Knights Hospitallers were closer to being early medics than firefighters. As I said, we tend to the 'Fire Service Star' because the star is what the early knights used as a symbol - it's eight points standing for the 'Eight Knightly Virtues' which we like to think also apply to firefighters. The Knightly VIrtues being Tact, Loyalty, Perseverance, Gallantry, Explicitness, Dexterity, Observation and Sympathy. The Knights that used a cross for the symbol of their order were those that were religious orders.

You say "the crusaders sacrificed their lives for their fellow man so many years ago". Do you really think that's what the crusades were about? Have a closer look, getting away from the religious memory. The crusades may have started out as being to save the Holy Land from the infidel (and was that itself a justifiable excuse for invasion?) but they ended up as a plain and simple land grab. The later crusades were Christian versus Christian.

Hold onto your Maltese Cross as a symbol for your fire services, it has a lot of meaning for you and is a good symbol. Be very proud of it. But it isn't an international symbol. Just as our Star or crossed fire axes aren't. I doubt that there can be a truly 'international' emblem.
Lutan? You win. That would have to be about the closest thing we could agree upon! And take note all, Lutan isn't a firefighter! So it takes someone from outside our service to come up with an idea...
I vote for Lutan1
I think... our emblem symbol is a bit compromised (North America - Europe thing). I think the helmet will be a symbol for us to meet halfway.
What about other continents?
See, not blindsided by tradition and history, and "That's how we've always done it!!!" :)
In the Philippines (island), we use the maltese cross.
Okay. The pole and the chick - she can wear the helmet.

With short notice, I couldn't find exactly what you wanted....

And for the girls, a photo of me....! :)

how about an image of a Fire Fighter fully PPE with a scott mask darkened or reflective carring a victim in arms, fire as a background a maltese cross in left corner star of life in right corner and irons in opposite corner and ladder or hose in 4th corner, the image would show to the public they may not know who the person in the mask is but they count on them for emergencies, use something along lines of our military..i.e...Marines are eagle globe and anchor for land air and sea...so on...we do a lot some people only see us standing around some only see the trucks drive by only a few have us cause they need us..
That sounds great Joey alot of people only see us standing around awaiting instructions, but never really know what we do That would be an awesome image to have.
