ok i posted a discussion asking about junior firefighter being pulled from school and recieved a lot of feedback, but it also brought up a new question.
WHat about 18 year old full firefighters who are still in school? your ideas?
thanks
Jessica
Basically thats what i want to do. Help others the best way i can. I thank you for your encouragement, a lot of people are basically shooting down some of my posts because they can't take me seriously because of my age and i really don't like that at all. I know im young but im not an idiot. I have pretty much set my career as being a physicians assistant and a volunteer ff or an emt on the side. Things could very easily change though.

In my volly house, The Jr members had to show the President & Chief their report cards. If the member was doing bad in any class, they were not allowed to ride or participate in any FD functions. They could not be in the station during the day unless they had written permission from there parents. And could stay up to 9PM on school nights. But what I told them and all the other officers agree is that during the school hours dont think about responding and get your school stuff done first.
I was a Junior FF and in school if you were to leave the teacher would excuse you only if...
There had to be working fire, fire only, no EMS or Auto Accidents. Our Chief had an agreement with the school. besides we were walking distance from the F.D. The siren would blare and we would also have pagers. We did NOT abuse this privilege. There were only 4 times in 3 years that I left school. I would have to say it would depend on department run volume. We were designed to leave only on brush fires, but with not abusing the right there are still allowed to do that today.
To answer your Question on 18 y/o. You have to have a high school diploma or GED to get a basic 36 ff / basic emt card. ie. out of school.
Don't take this badly, but you opened yourself up to criticism from the peers of FFN when you brought up the topic about skipping school to be junior firefighters on calls. To me that was an off topic since I do believe that you are way too young to be skipping out on school to go to FD calls. That is just an opening for a really bad day, really bad liability, and just not smart thing to do.
There have been too many kids, young adults, teens, being killed on the way to fires while riding on their bicycles, driving their cars recklessly and dying, and freelancing when they arrive on scene. Look at the facts and statistics that are out there. A 16yo drove a Tanker, not licensed, nor certified, a junior and ended up rolling it because of not knowing anything about driving a Tanker. This kid died senselessly, and they tried to call it a LODD death. I call it ridiculous. With age there is greater knowledge and ability.
I would not say your an idiot, but you are very young in the field, and in that are very "green" to alot of things. I wish you the best in whatever you find you want to do.
