I know sometimes its optional. Actually I would like to know what everyone does with their gear. Do you keep it at the station, leave it in your vehicle or at the back door for all to trip over?

Well try and have good hair days anyway...with all your humidity.
Stay safe.
Any day with helmet head is a good day!!! Our humidity is really not as bad as the south, at least we have trade winds to keep everything comfortable. Our house doesn't need air conditioning.
Being an officer I am able to take my gear with me at all times but all the black hats have to leave thier gear at the station. I leave my gear in the back seat of my truck so it is easy to get to so if I decide to go to the station and jump on a truck I can do that or go straight to the scene. I don't use a gear bag because I get dressed at my truck usually so I think that it is faster to leave it all out. One thing that I do that I love is bring my gear in the house at night so that when there is a run at night I can throw my gear on and go out the door to the call.
i have a set i keep w/ me as i stated in the comment i posted, but i also have a set i leave on my engine so i always have a set somwhere.not to mention on nights like i had last nite we had two calls back to back.my first set i had w/ me got wet, then two hours later after i got home we got another call at 2am to another house fire and i had to wear my other set bc it was ab 28 degrees and i was tired of freezing to everything metal i touched...its nice having two pairs of turnouts for that and i get a full set of PPE gear wherever i am..
I keep mine in the station. I live right behind it!
Maybe it's just me, but where I'm from (Central Ohio) it's rare that any department lets their FF take gear home with them. All the departments I know of agree with the idea that the first priority should be to get the trucks out the door, If you see all the trucks out of the station (or you heard them mark 'en route'), you know to go on to the scene. Plus, this has to help out with accountability. I don't see how other systems can work smoothly. Does anyone have any answers?
My first department in New Mexico was structured in the following way: Probies kept gear at the station. Members kept gear with them. For a call, the closest member went to the scene, unless the station was between them and the call, then they rolled apparatus. Other responding members were responsible to get needed apparatus rolling and once all apparatus was enroute, the remainder could proceed direct. The advantage here was that all members except cadets, had gear with them at all times. We were able to maximize response times by not having to go by the station to pick up gear if going direct, and able to get all apparatus rolling . Where we kept gear didn't matter because we had the versatility to take any situation in the most efficient manner. Either go to the station to roll apparatus, or go to the scene, either way you have you gear with you. We never had issues about apparatus getting out the door, and this was a department with two pumpers, three tankers, a heavy rescue and and two ALS busses. Yes, all volunteer.
We keep all our turnout gear is at the station. Everyone is assigned a "hook" where you hang your coat and helmet with your pants/boots below. It's all out the way so, there's no problem getting around inside the station (even though it's a small space).

I was told by the Asst. Chief that when he joined some 17 yrs. ago everyone kept their gear at home. They had a page out once on a meeting night. Everyone had to go to their house, get their gear, and THEN come back to the station. After that, all gear was kept at the station.
I keep my gear with me cause if i cant make the station to get on a truck i respond in my pov everyone on our department keeps their gear with them except one capt who only lives a block from the station and he is usually first to the station to grap a rig
We use to keep equipment at the station but then we got a department chief who was hositile toward the volunteers and equipment was hard to come by so by right of it aint being used some folks came up short made for some interesting meeting nights-- but anyway i keep mine at the house when i out of town and in the truck when i am home or loafing about town
were not really allowed to take our gear from the station. If we do its under special permision from the cheif
I have a jump bag that my gear goes in and it stays in my trunk, if I'm at the station for meetings or whatever I still have my gear, all the guys on the dept. do the same
