Have you noticed that some discussion threads just vaporize?
Here today; gone today?
My opinion is this:
A thread should NEVER be deleted by a moderator or the thread starter.
If conduct is the issue, then delete the post AND the poster. Many of us conduct ourselves with a certain sense of responsibility and can convey our opinions without throwing out personal attacks or by using obscene or offensive language. Good discussion and information is lost when an entire thread is deleted and I can't speak for you, but I come here to learn about others, their fire departments and their tactics.
I have spoken to WebChief about this and he knows my opinion. I want to know your's.
Did you know that you, as the thread's starter, can delete the entire thread, if you don't like what's being said? That's just ridiculous. I mean; the first opposing opinion that is stated and POOF! Thread starter doesn't like it; therefore, the thread is gone.
So, what do you think? Should discussion threads be deleted or should inappropriate conduct be dealt with instead?
It starts now.

I had something weird happen to me.
I replied to a blog and my reply was deleted.
Can the blogger delete replies?
I didn't need approval.
My reply was accepted. Then someone else replied, so I went to check it out and my reply was GONE.
Apparently, mercedes didn't like my reply.
Happen to anyone else?

I swear, this site seems to be populated with wannabees and trolls. They either want to be a "hero" or are trolling for their next cyber relationship.
Not to mention the ones who want to go "na na", stick their tongue out at you and then run away.
I wonder if there is a firefighternation for kids. You know; the Hannah Montana version.
Evidently Im more popular then you Art...or maybe just not as blunt. Wait I am...must have had my nice hat onwhen I replied today.
I agree with you all about deleting good discussions, but it would be a good thing in one regard, and that is the junk we have seen on here before. If the real frivolous and dumb ones were to get deleted, I would have less discussions to sort through to find the good stuff. I know this would be difficult, given that what one says is junk is someones gold. But, I think you know the ones I speak of, the REAL junk; if they got deleted I wouldn't be bothered at all.
They are flying out of here at a record pace.
I STILL say that the thread starter has WAY too many privileges that allows them to "shape" responses to their posts.
If they don't like a response, they can delete it or delete the entire thread. That is simply wrong on several levels.
If you are going to subject us to your latest relationship injustices, then at least have the decency to let the thread run its course.
Oh wait; if your soon to be ex reads it, he might get upset or better yet; EDUCATED.
Hmmm.
I thought the "music" thread was gone but I see it back again. I wonder if you can un-delete deleted threads also? I went through "my discussions" and didn't see my postings in that thread. I swear I did. But it's back.
re: Husband?
Apparently our opinions on this weren't supportive enough.
"Husband?" thread is now closed.
Probably by the "husband"; no doubt.
Or by the woman he plans on controlling; oops; I mean, marrying.
Dumb and Dumber II in theatres near you.
Well, another thread bit the dust. Completely gone.
Apparently, the young lady who likes to listen to her IPOD while responding and at the scene didn't like the responses that she was getting.
Most likely, she's upset because there are so many "uncool" people here who thought it wasn't a very good idea.
You know; we talk about honor and bravery in our fire service. We talk about our uncommon valor when dealing with tragic events. And we continue to reinforce the notion that it takes guts to do this job.
You know what? It takes guts to leave a thread up and to admit you're wrong too.
It's the right thing to do and especially if you are going to come here to ask for advice or promote some half-cocked/half-baked idea.
I will guarantee-no; I will make you the promise-that, when someone comes here with bad advice or a wrong tactic; rest assured, they will be corrected.
Whether they like it or not.
No; I'm not the forum police, but it is my hope that this site gets alot better and some of the trolls that currently populate it will find another bridge to live under.
If you can't leave your thread up, then I don't want to be your friend.
Folks

I've emailed Ning again to see if they can adjust this, but its not something likely to happen overnight (or soon)

However....I think you can have one good take away -- if someone goes to the trouble of deleting or closing their thread your points PROBABLY made it through :)

Dave
Also keep in mind that probably of the 1821 forum topics (Thousands of total replies), we're probably only talking about this happening 15 times or less
I agree totally, to be able to discuss or debate a thread ur going to have to have both sides. Its not all glory out here, we all get the criticism too. I dont think the one who writes the thread should b able to delete it. Whats the point in starting a thread or discussion if ur not open to suggestion that your opinion is only one in a million.
