Here in Central Illinois today, they are predicting an ICE storm that is set to begin around 9:00 am this morning.
Normally, I wouldn't be too concerned, because I would make like a hermit and stay in.
But, today is my wife's annual bus trip to Chicago to shop the Magnificent Mile and Fox Valley and I have concerns about the conditions on their return trip.
Over the years, we responded to a couple of tour bus accidents and they aren't pretty.
I hope that the man/woman behind the wheel leaves their lead foot home today.
Also, let's not to forget that if you are driving an emergancy vehicale, take a little more time in responding. Be alert for what the road conditions are in your area. Does no one any good if you get into an accident on your way to a call. Be safe out there everyone.
Very good point, Terry.
We just had a fire truck near us, that was responding to an MVA on I-474, hit frost on the bridge-the same frost that caused the MVA-slid off of the roadway and tipped over onto its side.
Could someone explain the phenomenon that causes the frost to form on over-passes? It has something to do with the air that moves under the over-pass, ambient temperature, type of road surface, but I think I am missing something.
Any highway engineers out there?

We BUFFALO(N.Y.) People know it's a term called BLACK ICE.it's called that since it's clear and on the pavement. It goes for cement too.It freezes because of the conditions here in the lower atmosphere.Like Wind, temp.,and type of surface and elevation.Bridges freeze first since they are the first to get, rain and snow,an being up in the air.You only need a micro-thin layer of moisture to freeze and everything can become a skating rink.Remember All Water based Liquids Freeze @ 32 degrees f.Think of having Ice on your helmet then driving on it. I'm sure Tiger Schmittindorff has a better definition on the subject.
You nailed that right on the head Tony.Warm clothes is a plus.Extra time is a plus, the blankets, flash lights.Every one stay safe out there. Now is the time for alot of calls such as fires,trees-lines down and ems calls. like Tony said take youre time. The call isnt going anywhere.
You guys are right, it was much colder this morning when I left shift. I had to go back in and put on a jobshirt ;) Brrrr (now I remember why I moved away from the frozen tundra).
I remember carrying my gear when I took FF2000(ff1),& It Snowed 8ft.in one night.well suffice to say it sucks wearing ice cold gear on a cold day.Plus TURN OUT GEAR IS GREAT TO SHOVEL SNOW IN!NICE & TOASTY,if your shoveling for awhile.
