Worcester Firefighter Pays Ultimate Sacrifice

On Dec 8, 2011 around 4:20am firefighters were called to 49 Arlington St for a structure fire.

Heavy fire was showing from the rear of the structure. Companies initiated an interior attack but conditions rapidly deteriorated forcing firefighters outside. Occupants then stated there may have been 1 more occupant still inside on the 2nd floor.

Firefighters went back inside to do a secondary search when the entire rear of the building pancake collapsed on 2 firefighters. 1 unfortunately passed away and the 2nd firefighter received serious injuries though expected to be ok. Both were trapped for over an hour.

It took 3 alarms to bring the fire under control. As of this time, no word on the occupant. Companies are still going through the debris.

This fire took place a week after the 12th anniversary of the Worcester Cold Storage fire.
