Around 2:20am on the morning of Feb 22, 2011, firefighters responding from the South Division firehouse knew they were going to work as flames were visible from the station. Upon arrival, a vacant dwelling was fully involved extending to exposures. A quick 2nd, 3rd and 4th alarms were transmitted.
In less than 10 minutes after arrival, the original fire building collapsed into a pile of rubble. Another vacant building was heavily damaged as well as an occupied apartment complex.
Ice, a narrow street and frozen hydrants hampered firefighting efforts as temps dipped to around 10 degrees. It took over an hour to bring this fire under control. 2 firefighters were injured.
