News Center - A fire is burning inside a commercial building near a subway line and expressway in a busy Queens neighborhood.
Flames and plumes of black smoke were shooting through windows of the third floor of the Bruson building at 74-09 37th Ave. in Jackson Heights Monday evening. The blaze, which started at about 6 p.m., spread to the fourth floor and escalated to five alarms.
Officials on the scene said winds drove flames to the north side, then back south. Over 170 firefighters were on the scene.
The four-story, 40-unit mixed-use building houses the Plaza Business Institute school and several businesses, including office and medical space. It's is located near the Roosevelt Avenue subway stop and the Brooklyn Queens Expressway.
A firefighters had minor injuries and a child from an adjacent building was being evaluated for breathing problems.
