Black smoke obscured the sunlit sky Saturday afternoon as an unstoppable blaze destroyed nine townhouses in Runaway Bay. The fire started at about 3 p.m. at Shoreside Terrace Townhomes. Firefighters from every department in the county responded, along with additional aid from Jack County. After two hours, nothing remained but ruins, ash, embers and smoke. At least 26 residents were displaced. There were no reported injuries. The Red Cross was on hand to dispense food, clothing and shelter for the victims. Several residents believed the fire started in the fireplace of one of the townhouses. As of this report, Fire Marshal Marc Dodd was still investigating the cause. December 20, 2009.
