An apartment building housing senior citizens caught fire Wednesday and at least one elderly man was flown to a Seattle hospital after being rescued from his unit.
The bedridden 85-year-old man was rescued from his first floor unit and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Firefighters had to break out a back window and enter the burning apartment to reach him His condition was not available Wednesday evening. Posted February 28, 2010

This video demonstrates the benefits of an adequate size opening when performing vertical ventilation.
I am sure the conditions for the firefighters inside improved dramatically, making the job of getting to the seat of the fire easier, but also raising the heat and toxic gases off any victims which may still be in the structure.

I am sure there are many people on this site that would not have sent a crew to the roof on this building because fire was already venting from attic vents, in my department we would have done the same as the guys in this video except for the use of a roof ladder.
