October 13, 2009. From STATter911.com http://www.statter91.com: DC Fire & EMS Chief Dennis Rubin talks about the sprinkler demonstration where the gear on 3 firefighters caught fire. Rubin takes responsibility but Raymond Sneed, IAFF Local 36 president, doesn't think that is enough.

It's nice that the Chief takes responsibility for the problem but the only thing I would remind everybody is we are all the safety officers on every seen. If we see something that is not safe or not correct it's are job to point that out. That is all I wanted to point out.

The most perfect planned out event can go wrong. It's called human error. Although human error can get someone hurt of worse killed, we should larn from this event. three things come to mind. 1. NO ONE DIED. 2. The Chief took total responsibility. Like he said "The buck stops here." 3. Instead of crying over spilt milk. Try taking the situation (publish it) and teach other firefighters, so they can larn from a true mistake. So, the same mistake isn't made in a real event!

This is a learning event if nothing happened other than the good folks were allowed to learn what a sprinklers can do. We would never have heard about it and Chief would have got the message to those intended to hear . Im sure the crew on scene were compensated to be there and this was not their first fire we all know that responsibilty of safety starts with ourselves. Chief Rubin admitted He has the ownership and is a Human being now let the chief be a Man and continue his relentless pursuit to take care of his troops and educate the public and the fire service. Atleast he was there!
