LedgerTranscript. Less than 48 hours after a house fire leveled a Sawmill Road residence Saturday night, another two-alarm fire consumed a historic Greenfield home.
At 2:32 p.m., firefighters were called to 420 Slip Road, the home of former selectman Conrad Dumas and his wife Ellen. A barn attached to the main home had caught fire and was fully involved by the time firefighters arrived. Within two hours, the barn and main building were destroyed.
Built in 1790 by Alden and Dorothy Foss, the home was one of the oldest in the area, according to Greenfield, New Hampshire: The Story of a Town, 1971-1976. Since 1987, it had served as home to Conrad Dumas and his family, their sheep farm and Ten Talents natural wool, wool products and meat.
Ellen Dumas had left the building at 12:30 p.m. yesterday after turning off the furnace and setting up a heat lamp near a sick lamb in the attached barn.
Im sure it had to be the heat lamp, said Dumas. I had a sick lamb. Shes dead now.
Fire officials yesterday could not confirm the origin of the fire.
