Engine 31 Mayday and Bailout

This video is of a fire and subsequent Mayday that occurred on Friday June 3, 2011 in the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. MFD Engine 31 experienced a collapse in the attic while searching for two children who were reported trapped. The hose line they were on lost pressure and the collapse cut off their primary egress to the stairwell. As a result of rapidly deteriorating fire conditions, the Officer and Nozzleman were forced to bail out the front attic windows.

The members of MFD unselfishly shared this story so others may benefit from their close call. It’s important for all firefighters to understand that you can do everything “perfect” both strategically and tactically and things can still go wrong! - How ready are you and your fellow firefighters if and when they do?

Comment by Manuel J Rodriguez on July 9, 2011 at 11:49pm: When I first came on I was stationed at E31 and that is where my brother is stationed he was the second firefighter on the rig that day.Every thing that could of gone wrong went wrong but thank god they all made it home and are all doing good now.My brother said when the roof collapsed then the may day was called he tried to get to his crew to get them out but was forced out by the heat.My bro told me he thought he just lost his crew he got to the back stair way where E12 was wating for water on the second line then he went back in with E12 to try to get his crew out they did not know his Boss and Pipemen bailed out the front window.His boss told the chief that after they went out the window that there was still one E31 ff in the building so a second may day was called out.
