City of Chelsea, Massachusetts - 2nd Alarm, 176 Central Ave, February 20, 2002. Crews rescue a mother and child from a project building, who became trapped when the apartment below theirs caught fire, rendering the interior hallways impassable with heavy smoke. Chief (then Captain) Bobby Better, Jr. of Ladder Co. 2 was first man up the ladder.
The members who performed this rescue, both from the exterior as well as the interior search and rescue crews who reach the victims at the same time, were honored at the 2002 Massachusetts Firefighter of the Year Awards.
