This morning on the Today Show, they ran a story about 911 call centers and how badly some function. In some states, workers are paid less than if they worked in the fast food industry. Many call takers are not required to have CPR or any other medical training.

At least parents. Its not my job to come running because You chose to be lazy and not go to the YMCA for a CPR class, and now your baby is choking on cheerios. Sure, it's my job to save the day, but not because you were negligent. Say you put a meatloaf in the oven, turned it on, and walked away. Suddenly the smoke detectors are going off and your kitchens on fire. You run over to the neightbors place and call 911, and as the Fire Department shows up you yell at them for not helping you sooner. Did the firefighters put the meatloaf in the oven? No. Did they walk away and let the stove catch fire? No. That was you. Not our fault. You would think watching your young child would be high on your list of priorities, huh?

While I understand her frustration with the lack of support from the dispatcher, first of all, when your freaking out and not giving us the info we need, we can't help you. Second of all, when your a parent, you should be educated in the areas of first aid and CPR. What happened is truly a tragedy, but what I'm hearing here is 'Oh my god! I didn't keep an eye on my child and something happened that I never bothered to be educated about! The system failed to compensate for my negligence and I'm upset about it!'. Call me cold, and brash, but we can't be held responsible for every lapse in judgement a parent has.
