One of the cool things about the fire station that I work at is that we get to do standby's for ANFO explosions. ANFO stands for ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. Several charges can be seen going off in sequence to take down the mountain.

The folks at the landfill discovered that it was cheaper to blow up a mountain verses using Cats to slowly scrap the surface but at a tremendous cost due to severe blade damage. This particular blast ended up with rocks falling WAY too close to the bystanders... us! Later in the week it was discovered that one of the boulders had gone through the superintendents office (he was gone on vacation) and returned to find a hole in the roof and his keyboard and display was destroyed. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... Boom!

Tom, I think that's one of the rules of engagement too- if you can see your enemy, they can see you too!!

In any energetic materials detonation the rule of thumb is that if you can see it (the blast) it can see you.
