I started out with a volunteer ambulance squad during my time in New York. When I got back to North Carolina I joined up with a local Rescue Squad and volunteered there part time while I was in college. I joined my local fire department in 1995 and have stayed with them since. I have gotten numerous certifications and was selected as a lieutenant in charge of special rescue about two years ago now.

Why I Joined Fire/EMS
Its a part of my nature to help people. I originally joined because it seemed like the "Cool" thing to do but since I have l learned that firefighting means sacrificing of yourself for the benefit of others and that is the most important thing there is.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
The smile I get from the the person I help when I do the job right.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
For the Volunteer side it has to be the fight to maintain training levels for all of the constantly advancing traing requirements vs. still being volunteer and thus not getting paid and having to carry a full time paying job along with family time. For the Paid service it has to be the constant fight to keep the publi, specifically elected officials, of the needs we have in order to maintain proper service.
