My Training:
Nationally Certified Paramedic and Firefighter. Possess provider and instructor certifications in ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, ITLS, GEMS, NRP, and AHA courses. Instructor for Paramedic and Intermediate level classes through the Center for Emergency Health Services which is part of Thomas Nelson Community College.
About Me:
I am a career firefighter / paramedic in Albemarle County, Virginia and also work part-time for Richmond Ambulance Authority in the city of Richmond. Additionally I am the Secretary-Treasurer for IAFF Local 4007. I have been involved in EMS and fire since 1999 primarily on the EMS side. Divorced April of this year and presently enjoying the single life. No children and no baggage. Looking for that someone special who can understand the demands and schedule of someone who is a career firefighter and is not looking to force a change in profession. Very few people can find a profession they truly love so I am very fortunate in this regards. I enjoy the outdoors including walking trails and hiking. Also like to do 4X4 activities, canoeing and fishing. I am the owner (or do they own me?) of two beautiful but hard-headed Scottish Terriers. I enjoy wine tastings, movies and music of pretty much all kinds. I prefer being with people who are articulate but not snobbish. Really enjoy a good conversation or debate on about almost any subject even if I don't agree with your position!
After 16 years in a corporate job I wanted to do something that offered greater personal reward and also allows me to be outside rather than stuck in a cubicle.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
I get to assist the public thereby giving me a feeling of self satisfaction.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
As always lower than average pay for the work performed. Now with the economy taking a dive there are many cost cutting endeavors taking place including the downsizing of some departments which places a greater risk on the remaining firefighters / EMS professionals as well as the community as a whole. It is also difficult to see fellow brother and sister career firefighters loose their jobs.
We are cross trained as FF and EMT. You have to be both in our system. That being said the physical agility test is challenging but not impossible. It is not he CPAT but rather the firefighter's challenge. Have you tested in other systems?
