Let me know how things turn out with your training program; I'm keen on developing our response--it's one of the glaring holes in our response plan. I'm personally going to be needing to do my fires for the year some time in the spring.
I have to say, there is no better place to be "stuck" than on San Juan Island. I spent several years early in my career looking to move back to the Seattle area, and getting onto a career department that runs a ton of calls. I've come to the realization that call volume isn't everything, and the agencies here on the island are every bit as competent and sometimes more enthusiastic than the paid folks I've dealt with. Life is good!

It's a work in progress: The Town of Friday Harbor is first-due to the airport, but we are at least a half a mile away, and I am the only ARFF certified firefighter. Fire District 3's headquarters is directly across the street from the runway, but there is no gate for them to get in. We just got a new airport manager, and he's already working the gate problem. I'm hoping to be able to get some grant funding, buy an ARFF-specific rig, and get some training for firefighters in both departments.
