PFC Tyler Thorpe U.S. Army 977th MP corps.

This past week, November 17, 18, 19th one of my close friends, my son, and I drove to NYC from Maine. This trip was a trip Tyler and I planned for many years but each time it got cancelled for one reason or another. Before I knew it, Tyler had graduated High School and he was off to the Army. Tyler is a firefighter for two call companies in our area, he is the real deal, loves everything about the fire service. Tyler is respected amongst his peers, and senior firefighters for his abilities on a fire ground. When Tyler recieved his deployment orders he called me and asked if we could finally take the trip to NYC we had planned so many times in the past. Ofcourse I said absolutely, He came home this month for block leave, and this coming December he heads to Afghanistan. Our trip was amazing, obviously one of our missions was to visit a couple of fire houses. We stopped at Rescue 1 in our travels. The crew that was working was so gracious, they invited us in to see the station, have coffee and shoot the breeze. When they heard Tyler was going on deployment they really expressed their apprechiation.

One of the bumps in the road that happened was, later that night Tyler dropped his cell phone in the cab we were in. The Iphone was gone, and virtually no way to get it back. On the cell phone was an email address of one of the guys from Rescue 1. Tyler promised to send a picture to them from his deployment, and is really bumming he lost the address.

If a brother from the FDNY reads this, I would also like to thank the crews from Rescue 5, Ladder 8, Truck 7, Ladder 43, The FDNY Musuem staff. Ladder 10, Engine 10. Brotherhood is for ever.

So if anyone reads this with any idea on how to get in touch with Rescue 1 house, Let me know. I wish you all well, and be safe.

My wife's phone recieved a message from Tyler. "leaving Ft. Riley, flying to Cherry Point then in to Bangor Maine. My wife ran upstairs and woke me up. Its 1130pm and his flight gets in to Bangor at 230am, We live 2.5 hours away. It was on like donkey kong, woke up two youngsters, threw them in Tahoe, and made mad dash for Bangor. Did I mention a blizzard? Oh yeah, a blizzard was just passing through and left the highway speed reduced to 40mph. Long story short, We got there as his plane was landing, we watched about 200 soldiers get off the plane and spent a bit over an hour with Tyler. He was so happy to see us, even at 3am. As we talked I looked around the small airport at the men and women in uniform, all have someone they call family, all of them scrambling to borrow a cell phone, or use a pay phone to call mom or dad or children and wife. Bangor is the last and first stop for most soldiers who deploy. They are greeted by a group of men and woman called "Bangor Troop Greeters". (look them up)... As I looked at all of them, try to thank or shake as many hands as possilbe, I was hit by a sense of pride, and feeling how lucky I am to have this prescioius time with Tyler. One young man looked at us and stated out loud, "man he has family here, lucky guy" We have some tough days on our jobs, when a brother or sister doesnt come back on the truck, engine or rescue. Our country soldiers have it just as tough.
I got a chance to hug my son, Firefighter/PFC Tyler Thorpe U.S. Army seconds before he reboarded his plane to Afghanistan. To him and the rest of the U.S. Army 977th MPCO Be safe, be focused, come home safely. I am not sure what a blog contains, or how people are supposed to ramble on.
If you have thoughts let me hear them. Am I the only firefighter on here that has a son or daughter in the service?
