I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS I NEED SOME HELP WITH. IN OHIO, DO FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDING IN A POV HAVE TO FOLLOW ALL LAWS? THIS INCLUDES SPEEDING AND CAREFULLY RUNNING INTERSECTIONS OR ANYTHING ELSE AS LONG AS YOU PUT NOBODY IN DANGER. I HAVE HEARD BOTH YES AND NO. ALSO THE DEPT IM ON SAYS THAT WE CANT USE LIGHTS AND SIRENS (OR EVEN HAVE THEM ON POV FOR THAT MATTER, EVEN IF NOT HOOKED UP) UNTIL AFTER AT LEAST 1 YEAR HAS PASSED AFTER WE HAVE BECOME CERTIFIED.

AFTER WE GET CERTIFIED WE GET A STICKER FOR OUR POV. IT CONSIDERS US A "PUBLIC SAFETY VEHICLE". LOOK AT http://law.justia.com/ohio/codes/2006/orc/jd_451124-eb6f.html AND YOU WILL SEE WHY IM SO CONFUSED.

WITH THAT BEING SAID, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU KNOW ABOUT THE OHIO LAWS FOR POV AND VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS.

PLEASE INCLUDE WHERE YOU GOT YOUR INFORMATION OR IF YOUR A FIREMAN IN OHIO PLEASE STATE WHERE AT.

YOU CAN ALSO SEND ME A MESSAGE.

THIS HAS BEEN REALLY CONFUSING TO ME.
PS - IM NOT YELLING. I ALWAYS TYPE IN CAPS.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

First and for most what everybody is forgetting is that his Chief has made it and SOG to not have lights or sirens until your probationary period is up and if your challenging your Chief.... Just remember he didn't make it to Chief on his looks, respect the discussions that he makes!

im not sure about ohio law, but disregarding traffic laws are never a good idea. even if you doi it within a controlled situation and everything works out fine, you must remember: flashing lights and sirens doesnt mean everyone will let you pass, and you are not invincible. using lights and sirens to shave seconds from getting to the station/ scene only works if everyone is safe. is it worth risking civilian lives to try and get there 30 seconds faster? also if you are involved in an accident while running lights and sirens in a pov who covers it? the department or your insurance? believe me i understand the rush you get when the pager goes off and your sense of urgency, but some self control goes a long way. if you are an explorer dont worry. you still have plenty of time to see plenty of fires. right now all you should worry about is listening to your superiors advice and continuing training. good luck and be safe!

According to your profile you're still an explorer so there is no reason for you to be worrying about lights and sirens. Second, even though you might not be yelling, typing in all caps is juvenile and you will be taken seriously if you type properly.... maybe you need to spend more time studying for english class.

Anyways, back to the original question. In Ohio, when a volunteer has lights and siren on his POV he is treated as a fire apparatus while responding. The law allows you to exceed the speed limit by 10 miles per hour, conditions permitting. You are allowed to go through a controlled intersection only after you have determined that all drivers have seen you and all traffic is stopped. The most important part of the law is that you must drive with DUE REGARD.
