In the bunk room at my station, there are 3 beds in a row, one of them being closest to the door on the way out.  I prefer when possible to grab that bed based on the fact that 2 other guys have to walk by me to get out and a squeaky door has to open, so by that point, I should hear something.  Fortunately for me, i'm a rather light sleeper yet I have had some near misses.

A suggestion may be to let the other guys know to "kick my bed on the way out".
