Quinton, Corrosion and oxidations can build up from salt being used on the road during the winter weather.( FETC) is correct keeping a lube on your studs will help with this problem.

Quinton, I have a mechanic background. You are right, they weren't stripped before you went in. What occurs is corrosion and oxidation builds up from the last time the rim was removed. This happens between the rim, studs and the lug nuts, and at times makes it difficult to get the lugs free'd up. Many times in the process of busting tires, a stud will break or get stripped while just trying to get your wheels off. I would bet it ISN'T from them turning the lug nut the wrong way.

The best way to prevent this is some light lube on the studs to prevent this from happening next time.
