I am currently reading a book a came across when searching through Amazon. It's called Leadership in Dangerous Situations edited by Patrick J Sweeney, Michael D. Matthews, and Paul B. Lester. The subtitle is A Handbook for the Armed Forces, Emergency Services, and First Responders.

The bookgathers much of the research into Leadership in life threatening context. The book is broken into three sections with 20 total chapters. Section One is Enhancing One's Psychological Body Armor. This section discuss the latest research in courage, stress, resilience, PTSD, and ethics. Influencing When People Are In Harm's Way is the name of Section. Subjects covered include trust, team building, morale, decision-making under stress. This section uses the Station Fire to apply the principles. The last section is Leveraging the Organization. Subject matter includes creating culture, recruitment, selection, and leader development.

Sections of the book may be somewhat dry at points as the author cite the psychological studies pertaining to each of the subject. As you can imagine this can be difficult reading. The authors then explain how the research can be used to assist the leader before, during and after life threatening situations. At the end of each chapter the authors have listed Key Take-Away Points that summarize the information in the chapter.

I have read about 25% of the book and have found something useful on just about every page. When I finish reading this book. I will post an complete review.
