I had my first, first-on-scene VSA the other day. The first page was sent out for a medical assist. I opted to go directly to the house since it was close by. I was caught a little off guard when I entered the home as the VSA info wasn't given till the second page, which I recieved after my patient contact had been made. I have recently been certified as a first reponder, so this was a good test to see how I managed the situation. After a couple of minutes of one rescuer CPR, a couple more ff's arrived (which seemed like forever to me, being my first time) and helped until the truck arrived a few minutes later...We were able to admin 3 shocks during CPR. Unfortunately, we were unable to save them due to an aneurysm which the fam had a history of...A few days later, our hall recieved a call from the family giving thanks to us for all we did, and a special thanks to the first responder on scene(me) for the professionalism and immediate care given. I am very glad to hear that I performed well in a real life situation!!

Kudo's to you Jess. Stressful situation to find yourself in and flying solo...even for a brief period of time.
I remember my first VSA call very well. The adrenaline was flowing. Was my first shift on the ALS truck and the first call of the night. My pt did not survive and was pronounced at the hospital...however, enroute I did compressions and we were able to get a rhythm back 3 times en route. I will never forget that call, I don't think any of us forget our first VSA. The feelings that I had before, during and after that call. Even when our best efforts fail and we've done everything we can possibly do to try and save our pt's...go home at the end of your shift/call knowing you did everything you could do and although we can not save everyone, what we do DOES make a difference.
